A roll-off container can handle most of what a cleanout or remodel generates. A short list of materials, though, is regulated or hazardous and needs to go through separate disposal channels. Sorting that out before loading saves you extra fees and a pickup that gets turned away.
What's Generally Accepted
- Household clutter, old furniture, and mattresses
- Remodeling debris such as drywall, lumber, flooring, and fixtures
- Roofing tear-off material, siding, and decking
- Yard debris like branches, brush, sod, and soil (keep an eye on weight)
- Clean concrete, brick, and masonry fill, provided you have the right size container
What Needs to Stay Out
The items below are off-limits because they're hazardous, tightly regulated, or covered by dedicated recycling programs:
- Hazardous waste, chemicals, solvents, and wet paint
- Fuel, oil, and propane tanks
- Tires, batteries, and used motor oil
- Appliances with refrigerants, like refrigerators and air conditioners
- Electronics and TVs
- Asbestos and other regulated materials
